Artist Statement:
Recently, many things have happened in my life where I have felt like I am constantly waiting for something or longing for how something used to be. I know things will never be the same yet I can’t help but yearn for a time when everything wasn’t so overwhelming and complicated. I’ve experienced a lot of self-isolation and loneliness as a result.
I sought to create a book incorporating original photography and poetry that evokes an overall sense of melancholy and loss. Art has always been a way I can express myself and work through my pain without having to talk to someone or phrase things in a direct manner. The poems I write are often incredibly vulnerable and generate a lot of emotion for me and I strove to convey those feelings to viewers. By pairing two art forms, I wanted to make the viewing experience even more rich and powerful by having visuals accompany the written words.
Most of the photos in this book were primarily shot outside in nature. I tried to capture subject matter that felt lonely, imperfect, overpowered, or broken in some way. Through editing and organizational choices, I hoped to generate a sense of sadness and metaphorical desolation within my photos.
